This summer, why not travel to a black hole?

Via Backreaction, I found the winner of the Top Pirelli Prize. (I wrote about their relativity challenge at Qulog 1.0, but can’t find the winner of that…) It’s a website devoted to Black Holes, called Gravity’s Relentless Pull. The authors have also written a paper about their site.

A fast internet connection is recommended, as the site is heavy on (impressive) interactive movies. You can travel in an imaginary space ship (with, as is noted, “a scientifically impossible speed”) to a black hole, and even get Up Close and Personal with it. Or find out if you can orbit a black hole without falling into it, by adjusting your position and velocity in a simulation. There is an extensive Black Hole Encyclopedia with answers to various questions on the nature, formation and existence of black holes, and several ‘experiments’.

Authentieke discussie

Hier op het Cd-beta hebben we het vaak over ‘authentieke praktijken’ waar je je onderwijs op zou kunnen (of moeten?) baseren. Nou komt dat woordje authentiek wel meer voor in onderwijsland. Ik vond de volgende discussie over wat dat eigenlijk betekent, ‘authentiek’, in het bijzonder als het over leren gaat. Tom Kooij vraagt zich af wat een authentieke leeromgeving voor pakweg vwo-natuurkunde zou kunnen zijn. Hij verwijst naar een postje van Sybilla Poortman, en vooral de reacties daarop, waarin de vraag werd opgeroepen wat authentiek eigenlijk betekent. Heeft het vooral met ICT-leeromgevingen te maken, die nadrukkelijk ‘authentiek’ moeten zijn? Is het niet hetzelfde als betekenisvol? Dit lokt een volgend postje van Sybilla uit: het zijn geen synoniemen, iets kan best authentiek en tegelijk niet betekenisvol zijn. Rino Zandee gaat verder op zijn eigen blog, concludeert dat authentiek misschien een noodzakelijke maar dus geen voldoende voorwaarde is voor betekenisvol. Daarnaast lijkt het hem een modewoord uit het ‘nieuwe leren’.

Hm, jaja, nou. Een paar ideetjes.

Zondagochtend hoorde ik het volgende gedicht in het radioprogramma Vroege Vogels. Het werd geschreven en voorgedragen door dichter/presentator Frank van Pamelen.

Stijldans

Wanneer ik aankom op de vroege zondagmorgen
En eerst de tjiftjafchacha en daarna de merelmambo zie
Kan elke vogeldans mij kippenvel bezorgen
Vanwege de perfecte choreografie

Larger than a grand piano

A vibrating or even oscillating bridge can be fun, scary, possibly dangerous – but, thanks to Bill Fontana, now it can be musical, too. Fontana is an America artist who turned London’s MilleniumBridge (wow, the English do that strange thing with capital letters in the middle of words, too) into a musical instrument: the HarmonicBridge.

The vibrations of various parts of the bridge are tracked by a network of accelerometers and translated into a ‘soundscape’ that can be heard in the Turbine Hall of Tate Modern, at one end of the bridge, and at Southwark station.

According to the Tate website,

The thicker suspensio cables resonate with the inner solidity of the bridge which flexes but remains constant, while the thin wires below the handrail create an idiosyncratic complex of jangles and twangs. Vibrations caused by wind, boats, wheelie bags or footsteps register in different ways to create a spectrum of contrasting rhythms, tones and percussive shimmers.
