Tikkie!

Terwijl ik net in een nogal drukke en vooral uithuizige periode zit, hebben de wiskundemeisjes mij getikt en nu moet ik vijf intrigerende feitjes over mezelf vertellen, én vijf andere bloggers tikken. Hier komt-ie dan, eindelijk.

1. Ik ben dit jaar vrijwilliger bij het Internationaal Filmfestival Rotterdam. Vandaar ook die drukte en uithuizigheid.

2. Tot nu toe was elk huisnummer dat ik had hoger dan het vorige. (beginnend met de mooie reeks 5, 9, 45)

3. Volgend op puntje 1: in de afgelopen 5 dagen heb ik al 8 films gezien, een persoonlijk record.

4. Mijn kerstkaartjes hangen nog aan de trap.

5. Ik heb een sinaasappelboom-in-wording in mijn kamer, zelf opgekweekt van een pit uit een (pers-) sinaasappel van de supermarkt.

Blue cube, orange Moebius

As promised, another picture of my geeky craft projects. The green, orange and red parts of this string are made from one strand of yarn, the blue parts I made separately and added later.

The blue things are, left to right, a tetrahedron (shape with four (more-or-less) regular triangular sides), a spiraling tube, a square donut, a box with six edges, a cube, and a not quite spherical sphere.

Math on a tree

Inspired by the posts at Uncertain Principles called Science on the Tree, I decided to photograph my selfmade mathematical tree decorations.

Of course, than I sort of forgot about it, and the film had to be developed (nope, don’t have a digital camera….), but thanks to Clifford I remembered. He likes crocheting too!

So here is a sample of my tree decoration:

Next up: a string with colourful mathematical objects, all crocheted as well: tetrahedrons (is that a word?), moebius strips, cubes, and more….

Workshop podcasten

Volgende week ga ik een workshop podcasten bij het IVLOS doen. Omdat het leuk is, en omdat ik me aan het oriënteren ben op nieuw werk, en een van de orientatierichtingen is ‘iets met internet en nieuwe media enzo’.

Een paar links uit de mail met informatie: de software die we gaan gebruiken en die ik nog moet downloaden op m’n iBookje;

een cursusje podcasten in 10 stappen van OSS in het onderwijs;

en een column plus discussie over de (on)zin van podcasts op Marketingfacts.nl (zo kom je nog ns ergens, websgewijs).

www?

Ik wilde de in de NRC besproken website scienceguide.org even bekijken. Die zou links naar artikelen en wetenschappelijke achtergrondinfo bij het nieuws brengen. Interessant.

Ik heb het nog niet gedaan, want ik moet eerst mijn verbijstering kwijt: ik typte scienceguide.org in de browser balk en vond een website die over gopher ging, en iets met publiceren-on-demand. (Oh, kijk, nu is die Snap-functie wel heel handig!) Hm vreemd. Dan maar www.scienceguide.org, hoewel dat toch niet zoveel uit zou moeten…… en ja hoor. Een heel andere website!

Ik vind het normaal al raar als een een website (die van de Universiteit Utrecht bijvoorbeeld) onvindbaar is zonder www. ervoor. Maar dit is helemaal eh, bijzonder.

Link previews

A new feature has suddenly appeared on Qulog: when you ‘hover’ over a link, a picture of the site linked to is shown, before you even click it. This is a service called Snap (from snap shots, I gather) and WordPress is testing it out on 10 % of its blogs. You can read about it on their post Snap to it!.

I’m not sure how I like it yet, those popping pictures can be annoying when you don’t intend to click the links anyway and are just reading. On the other hand it may be useful sometimes to see the site before you click and then decide you do or don’t want to see it. Usually I check Firefox’s status bar before clicking a link to see where it’s gonna send me (‘that’s a link to another post on the same blog, but this one is of a news article’), and that wouldn’t be necessary now.
