Update: I added the hands-on math&science tag. This is more than just fun or hypnotising to watch on a Friday afternoon…! You can add acrobots to the situation (by clicking on the big plus) and witness a sort of phase-transition: as it gets more crowded, the situation changes from individual bots bouncing around to one network moving, changing shape, breaking up and reconnecting…

It’s like… liquid water turning into ice? And the hands are the H-bridges between the molecules? OK, not really, the number of hands doesn’t make sense then, but well, something like that. Sorry, it’s Friday afternoon….

Computerondersteund onderwijs (en games?)

Zoals ik eerder al schreef ben ik op zoek naar werk dat beter bij mij past dan het onderzoek waar ik me de afgelopen jaren mee bezig hield. Een paar van de trefwoorden die steeds terugkwamen zijn onderwijs en ‘nieuwe technologie’. Sinds vorige week loop ik stage bij het CPIO ofwel mijn collega Elly, die computerondersteund onderwijs maakt voor de faculteit het departement Biologie van de UU. Zo kan ik wat leren, iets concreets doen en uitproberen of ik het echt leuk vind, of alleen een leuk idee.

Ik ben mij nu door een handleiding Authorware heen aan het werken, en tegen de tijd dat ik daar (een beetje) mee overweg kan, ga ik me storten op een echte onderwijsmodule, waarschijnlijk een over biologische technieken die worden gebruikt om genetisch materiaal te manipuleren (zoals DNA-fingerprinting en micro arrays).

En wellicht ga ik, om mij nog wat breder te orienteren, naar het (gratis) SAGANET Seminar “Gaming en Game-opleidingen” op 10 mei in Breda. Games zijn hip, immers, ook of juist in onderwijsland. Ik zou verwachten dat daar wel meer Nederlandse edubloggers zullen verschijnen… misschien ter herkenning nog gauw dit shirtje aanschaffen?

Update: ik ga niet, het gaat me iets teveel over game-opleidingen en te weinig over games-in-het-onderwijs.

Hyperbolic plane, spring edition

Here is another picture of one of my crochet projects: a hyperbolic plane in fresh spring colours. It’s all curled up because it has a saddle shape everywhere, just like the blue hyperbolic plane I blogged about earlier. This one does not consist of regular triangles, however. It is basically a spiral of stitches, with every new round 3/2 times as long as the last.

On the picture on the right (click on it for a larger one) you can see how it all started: with a fairly small ring of maybe 20 stitches. At first, the whole thing was flat like a panckae (but with a hole in it), then it started to flare like a summer skirt or a stingray, and after a few more rounds it curled up into this fluffy ball.

TASP – Als het heet is

Ik heb ooit een boekje uit de bieb gehad dat “Rijmelarie” heette, met daarin zoals verwacht allerlei absurde gedichtjes. Er was er een over een gymleraar die steeds “Verrek!” en “Verdraaid!” zei, (maar die ik helaas niet meer ken) en wat variaties op uitdrukkingen zoals deze:

Rozen verwelken,
schepen vergaan.
Koop dus geen bloemen
en vlieg voortaan.

Nadeel van al dat vliegen is natuurlijk de klimaatverandering waardoor het volgende versje – gezien de afgelopen dagen – zeer invoelbaar wordt:

Geen wonder dat de hoefsmid
bij dit weer zo bezweet is;
wie smeedt er nu in ‘s hemelsnaam
het ijzer als het heet is?

Meer Brahms-gezang deze week

Alsof het zo uitgedacht is: na het Estrivo-concert van vanavond – met veel muziek van Brahms – is komende week diezelfde Brahms Componist van de Week op radio 4. En ze gaan nu eens niet de symfonieën draaien, maar juist zijn vocale muziek.

A torus and a cube with holes

When I made the double torus that Wilfred asked for, I thought about other torus-like shapes. For example a ball with a hole drilled through it, like a bead. And what would a bead like that look like if you drilled more holes through it, one from top to bottom, one from left to right, and the last one front to back? Or more to the point, what would its surface look like?

That was a bit hard to imagine exactly, so I decided to make one to find out. And I figured I wouldn’t worry about making it nice and spherical, but concentrate instead on the three ‘tunnels’ that meet in the center. I started with one of the faces, worked my way in, turned left and then outward to another face, joined the two faces on the edge, continued with the third, and so on.

(I tried to write down the procedure in more detail, but then I should have made some pictures along the way to make it a bit clear… if you want to make one yourself, try figure it out from here! :-))

Word is gek

Wat ik me afvraag: bedoelt Word nu dat ik over de stand van een molecuultje, of over de tand van molecuultjes moet schrijven?

Letztes Glück – Concert

 Als Machiel reclame maakt voor zijn concerten, dan durf ik het ook wel… :-)

Aanstaande zaterdag dus, 20:15 uur, Doopsgezinde Kerk, Oudegracht 270 in het centrum van Utrecht. (En ook nog op 16 juni in Bunnik.)

We zingen afwisselend drinkliederen van Schein en klaagliederen van Brahms (zie ook de psycho-meteorologie-aflevering van de TASP), in verschillende bezettingen: gemengd koor a capella, vrouwenkoor met hoorns en harp, en mannenkoor a capella.

Komt dat zien, komt dat horen!
