Van de maker van de windvinder… de Bol

Gewoon een geweldig idee. Doet me denken aan het meetprobleem in de quantummechanica en Schrödingers kat, maar daar heeft het eigenlijk niks mee te maken (denk ik nu, in elk geval). Maar leuk! Leuk!

Van binnen is de bol een zonnewijzer. Door een gat valt de zon op een precies berekend systeem van lijnen die op de binnenkant van de bol gegraveerd zijn. Met een grote en nutteloze nauwkeurigheid geeft dit instrument de tijd aan, waar je ook bent – ZOLANG JE ER NIET NAAR KIJKT !
Er zit maar één gat in de bol: Zodra je jouw tijd tracht af te lezen, blokkeer je zelf het licht en verdwijnt daarmee de meting.
Laat je „het“ met rust, is het er weer.

Stars

Ah! why, because the dazzling sun
Restored our Earth to joy,
Have you departed, every one,
And left a desert sky?

Ga je nog wat vertellen over die nieuwe baan?

… vroeg Tom Kooij mij onlangs.

Ja, natuurlijk. Mijn nieuwe baan.

Ik werk sinds 1 september 2007 bij het Junior College Utrecht, kortweg JCU.

Het JCU is een onderdeel van de Universiteit Utrecht en werkt samen met 26 middelbare scholen uit de (wijde) omgeving. We hebben twee doelen: onze leerlingen uitdagend en motiverend bèta-onderwijs bieden; en een proeftuin zijn voor nieuw bèta-onderwijs voor VWO.

Het is dan ook heel toepasselijk dat ik bij het JCU twee functies heb: het ontwikkelen van de module Levensloop van Sterren (astrofysica, niet celebrity-watching) die onze zesdeklassers nu kunnen volgen; en het voor de docenten van onze partnerscholen mogelijk maken om mee te helpen in de proeftuin en er de vruchten van te plukken.

Exoplaneet gevonden?

Drie Leidse studenten hebben waarschijnlijk een exo-planeet gevonden. Het was de bedoeling dat ze zouden oefenen met het automatisch doorzoeken van grote hoeveelheden data op specifieke fenomenen, maar dat ging zo voortvarend dat ze in nog niet eerder onderzochte data een ster vonden met een opvallende eigenschap: elke tweeenhalve dag werd hij even iets minder helder.

Dat komt mooi overeen met een grote planeet die in tweeenhalve dag om de ster draait en zo telkens even wat licht tegenhoudt.

An oldie but definitely a goodie: middle school science teacher and blogger Ms Frizzle wrote a song about hydrogen, to the tune of “Jingle Bells”.

Ik ben er nog

Heus.

Alleen een beetje druk, met mijn nieuwe baan bij het JCU. Dat is in dit geval niet de Johan Cruijff Universiteit, zoals mijn tante dacht, maar het Junior College Utrecht. Een plek waar gemotiveerde 5/6VWO-leerlingen uitdagend bètaonderwijs krijgen, en waar dat onderwijs ontwikkeld wordt, niet alleen voor het JCU zelf maar ook voor het ‘nieuwe bètavak’ Natuur, Leven en Technologie.

Waarover later meer, als ik een beetje op adem ben gekomen. :-)

This summer, why not travel to a black hole?

Via Backreaction, I found the winner of the Top Pirelli Prize. (I wrote about their relativity challenge at Qulog 1.0, but can’t find the winner of that…) It’s a website devoted to Black Holes, called Gravity’s Relentless Pull. The authors have also written a paper about their site.

A fast internet connection is recommended, as the site is heavy on (impressive) interactive movies. You can travel in an imaginary space ship (with, as is noted, “a scientifically impossible speed”) to a black hole, and even get Up Close and Personal with it. Or find out if you can orbit a black hole without falling into it, by adjusting your position and velocity in a simulation. There is an extensive Black Hole Encyclopedia with answers to various questions on the nature, formation and existence of black holes, and several ‘experiments’.
