TASP – Turing

In Memoriam Alan Turing

TASP (Wednesday edition): Large Hadron Rap

What is the Large Hadron Collider? Rapper science writer Kate McAlpine explains:

LHCb sees where the antimatter’s gone
ALICE looks at collisions of lead ions
CMS and ATLAS are two of a kind
They’re looking for whatever new particles they can find.
The LHC accelerates the protons and the lead
And the things that it discovers will rock you in the head.

TASP – repeating myself quoting someone else

Because it’s such a fine song, and I’m writing about stars and hydrogen these days.

Hydrogen, hydrogen, atomic number one

Oh what a bang it is to be the fuel inside the Sun!

TASP – the 50th edition! – Stars

Celebrating my astrophysics course with a romantic poem about the stars.

Stars

Ah! why, because the dazzling sun
Restored our Earth to joy,
Have you departed, every one,
And left a desert sky?

All through the night, your glorious eyes
Were gazing down in mine,
And, with a full heart’s thankful sighs,
I blessed that watch divine.

I was at peace, and drank your beams
As they were life to me;
And revelled in my changeful dreams,
Like petrel on the sea.

Thought followed thought, star followed star,
Through boundless regions, on;
While one sweet influence, near and far,
Thrilled through, and proved us one!

Why did the morning dawn to break
So great, so pure, a spell;
And scorch with fire the tranquil cheek,
Where your cool radiance fell?

Blood-red, he rose, and, arrow-straight,
His fierce beams struck my brow;
The soul of nature sprang, elate,
But mine sank sad and low!

My lids closed down, yet through their veil
I saw him, blazing, still,
And steep in gold the misty dale,
And flash upon the hill.

I turned me to the pillow, then,
To call back night, and see
Your worlds of solemn light, again,
Throb with my heart, and me!

It would not do–the pillow glowed,
And glowed both roof and floor;
And birds sang loudly in the wood,
And fresh winds shook the door;

The curtains waved, the wakened flies
Were murmuring round my room,
Imprisoned there, till I should rise,
And give them leave to roam.

Oh, stars, and dreams, and gentle night;
Oh, night and stars, return!
And hide me from the hostile light
That does not warm, but burn;

That drains the blood of suffering men;
Drinks tears, instead of dew;
Let me sleep through his blinding reign,
And only wake with you!

TASP – the cute little animals edition

First stage of science is seeing what’s there, and giving everything names, right? So this is a perfectly acceptable first-stage-scientific poem:

The Guppy

Whales have calves,
Cats have kittens,
Bears have cubs,
Bats have bittens,
Swans have cygnets,
Seals have puppies,
But guppies just have little guppies.

Ogden Nash (source)

And it allows me to post another one of those cute LOLcats:

Beware of the fish!

Middelbaar onderwijs

Het mooiste meisje van de klas
verschikt onwennig bij haar schouder
het bandje van haar bustehouder;

TASP – Herfst

Herfst

Blad valt niet blad dwarrelt
angstvallig naar beneden houdt zich vast
aan de takken krult
zijn vingers om de wind
sterft niet stilaan af
maar schreeuwt de wereld in vlammen
als de ondergaande zon
blad wil niet liggen wil
niet roesten op de aarde wormenvoer
en deken voor narcissen
ijdel blad wil gaan naar waarvandaan
het kwam de boom bedekken
met een groene mantel der liefde

TASP – the fuel inside the sun

An oldie but definitely a goodie: middle school science teacher and blogger Ms Frizzle wrote a song about hydrogen, to the tune of “Jingle Bells”.

Hydrogen, hydrogen
Atomic number one
Oh what a bang it is to be the fuel inside the sun
Hydrogen, hydrogen
atomic number one
Oh what a bang it is to be the fuel inside the sun

In its nucleus
is a proton by itself
an electron spins nearby
in its closest shell.
Hydrogen’s a gas,
very low in weight.
What fun it is to read and sing an atom song tonight!

Hydrogen, hydrogen
Atomic number one
Oh what a bang it is to be the fuel inside the sun
Hydrogen, hydrogen
atomic number one
Oh what a bang it is to be the fuel inside the sun

Two hydrogens can bond
with a single oxygen
to make a molecule
called “water” by its friends.
This non-metal is burned
making stars so bright.
What fun it is to read and sing an atom song tonight!

TASP – I used to think he said “Beatle-juice”

This week’s science poetry is about stargazing.

Far Out

I spy in the night sky don’t I
Phoebe Io Elara
Leda Callisto Sinope
Janus Dione Portia So Many Moons
Quiet in the Sky at night
Hot in the Milky Way
Outside in
Vega Capella Hadar Rigel Barnard’s star
Antares Aldebaran Altair Wolf 359
Betelguese sun sun sun

(Blur, from “Parklife”)

Just occurs to me now that you could make a cool sciency video to this song using different pictures of the stars mentioned…
